Our Story

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, top scoring Allied Fighter Ace, J.E. "Johnnie" Johnson, was visiting his son, Mike Johnson, in Connecticut. Johnnie showed Mike an early brochure of Robert Taylor's first print, "Spitfire," and asked if he were interested in becoming a distributor for aviation art. With this print listed for $7.00 US, Mike immediately thought, "we're going to need to sell a TON of these to make a buck!"

Meanwhile, in the 1990s, Jon Stenberg's passion for aviation quickly melded into a passion for aviation art. While at the Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Museum in 1993, low on cash and full of aspiration, he came across a stack of prints on the bottom shelf in the museum's gift shop. He did quick math to determine how much gas money he needed to go from Michigan back to Connecticut, excluding any luxury purchases like food - LOL! He made the offer and the gift shop accepted his payment of $1,740, the remaining credit he had left on his one credit card. That day, Stenberg Aviation Art was born.

In Spring 2024, Jon acquired Wings Aviation Fine Arts from the Johnson family and drove the collection from Canada to Minnesota in a 26 foot moving truck with dear friend and fellow aviation art enthusiast, Steve Sherman. Today, Wings' home is in Round Rock, Texas where both Jon and his wife, Laura, run the business and preserve the legacy of Johnnie Johnson.
